Free Legal Clinic in St. Croix County
The St. Croix Valley Bar Association is holding a free legal clinic the second Monday of every month at the St. Croix County Government Center. Bakke-Norman Attorney Maureen Wegleitner and St. Croix County Clerk of Court Lori Meyer led the effort to open the clinic. The free legal clinic is staffed by St. Croix Valley Bar Association attorneys. All of the administration and legal services provided to the clinic by attorneys and support staff is voluntary. Legal Assistant Linda Sharretts volunteers her time to receive visitors who wish to use the free clinic’s services. Attorneys Dan Steffen and Andy Schutte have volunteered their services at the clinic. Wisconsin State Bar Pro Bono Coordinator Jeff Brown assisted Attorney Wegleitner and Clerk of Court Meyer by providing State Bar sponsorship of the event as well as liability insurance for attorneys who volunteer their time and expertise. Participation of the public has steadily increased since its inception in April of 2005. Each individual can discuss their situation with an attorney for ten minutes after signing a waiver to indicate they understand they are not being represented by that attorney or the attorney’s law firm. General information is given in the following areas of law: family law, landlord/tenant and small claims, criminal/traffic, estate planning/elder law/probate, real estate, business law, and bankruptcy. |
